Design and make your own fabrics in this fabulous 2-day workshop!

A current trend in fashion and home-wares, Shibori is an ancient Japanese dyeing technique that involves folding, twisting or bunching cloth and binding it before dyeing it in indigo to create beautiful textile designs. In this 2-day introductory workshop with artist and textile maker Micaela Christie, you’ll develop an understanding of Shibori techniques and surface design procedures to create your own fabrics. You’ll get hands-on experience in preparing and using an indigo vat, selecting suitable fabrics as well as techniques to create a different patterns including using wood blocks, rubber bands and folding. At the end of the course you will have created unique fabric samples that you can take home and make into cushions, clothing or other home-wares.

Full instruction is provided on materials, products, tools, equipment and studio procedures.

Intimate class size: maximum 8 students
Level: designed for beginner level students.
Wear: comfortable clothing and enclosed shoes (aprons provided).
Bring: yourself – all materials provided

We use non-toxic inks and non-toxic cleaning products and methods wherever possible.

Tutor: Micaela Christie
Since 2010, Micaela has been the creative director of Atomic Fox, a studio that produces hand printed textiles and artwork for interiors, home-wares and costumery. Her work can be found in private collections in Australia and the UK. Based in the Blue Mountains, Micaela’s multidisciplinary practice incorporates printmaking, painting, graphic design, fibre and lighting installations. She is a graduate of the University of NSW College of Fine Arts (UNSW Art & Design). Her work is handcrafted with love and passion.
